SAILING THE HIGH SEAS WITH POS
|
TO ALASKA'S GLAICER BAY IN 2004
|
The POS sponsored 2004 cruise sailed to Alaska
aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines ship, "Star", which
was built in 2001. This extraordinary 965 foot long
ship was staffed with 1,120 internationally diverse
people waiting to tend to our every need. Our
days and nights at sea were made special with
the "Star's" 10 distinctive restaurants, indoor
pools and Jacuzzis, and 14 lounges and bars.
There was also a spa, fitness center, beauty saloon,
golf driving range, jogging track, and volleyball and
basketball courts aboard this spectacular sailing vassal.
Imagine, POS' family and friends, and
partners sailing from the breathtaking
port of Seattle aboard the "Star" in our
spacious cabins with a private balcony
which provided us with magnificent views
of the Inside Passage.
We marveled at the panoramic
vistas as this Super Liner cruised
the Gulf of Alaska and transits
through the 67 miles of the Lynn
Canal before it navigated past the
16 glaciers of College Fjord in
Prince Williams Sound.
We were placed in the company of humpback whales, flower-carpeted
fields, and massive icebergs while sailing with through part of the Last
Frontier. POS visited the cities of Ketchikan, Juneau, Victoria and
Skagway were we truly experience the Last Frontier.
Ketchikan, Alaska is the fourth largest city
in Alaska and is known as Alaska's Native
Cultural Center and Sport fishing Capital. It
was the supply base and entry port for
miners during the 1898 gold rush to the
Klondike. We found much of the town of
Ketchikan to have a colorful past which is
still in evident, especially in nearby Indian
Villages where we saw colorfully carved
totem poles. They say Ketchikan has more
hand carved totem poles then anywhere
else in the world. The natives were eager
to share the fascinating legends that
surround these poles.
While in Ketchikan, Alaska
we experienced the sheer
granite cliffs, plunging
1,000-foot waterfalls,
crystalline lakes, and the
low-hanging mists of Misty
Fjords from the air on a
seaplane. Some of us took a
memorable kayaking trip to
the beautiful Tatoosh Island
where they saw a few bald
eagles, seals, and sea lions.
While in Juneau, Alaska we experienced all the excitement of a glacier
helicopter tour combined with a dogsled ride over a snow-covered glacier.
We flew in a nostalgic floatplane over five breathtaking glaciers to the
Taku Glacier Lodge for a king salmon feast. (Above: A young man goes
canoeing on a lake in Juneau. Right: A quaint Juneau church.)
Juneau, the capital of Alaska which has some of Alaska's
most spectacular scenery. Nestled at the foot of Mt.
Juneau, the city faces the water from the mainland side
of Gastineau Channel. Several magnificent fjords are
located along the channel coast, and the majestic
Mendenhall Glacier, the perfect picturesque spot.
penetration by boat was at the northern tip of the Lynn Canal.
While in Skagway, two club members rode the White Pass & Yukon
Railroad and then they visited a historic Gold Rush camp, where
they strolled through cabins and tents used as a bakery, a saloon
-- even a so called bordello. (Above Right: A welcome sign for the
first incorporated town in Alaska, the quaint town of Skagway.

Victoria sits on the south tip of
Vancouver Island off the west
coast of British Columbia,
Canada. It is a city of 300,000 with
a breathtaking inner harbor area.
This part of our trip featured a
walking town, where we did a little
shopping in the world's tiniest
store, art galleries and of course
Chinatown (they say it is the
oldest and most exquisite in North
America-- and we agreed).
